The web is a great place to get information and to chat to people.

Most people you chat to on the net are probably harmless, but it's still worth following a few steps to make sure you keep safe.

Someone you chat to on the net may sound kind and caring, but there's no way to tell if that's what the person is really like. You should always be careful what you tell people online when you don't know them.
Always keep your name, address, and phone number secret.
Keep other personal information secret too, such as the school you go to or what sports teams you're in.
Always keep your passwords secret, if you think someone has found out what your password is then you should change it.
Stay in the public areas of chatrooms.
If you really want to meet up with someone you've met on the net, tell your parents or carers.
Only ever arrange to meet in a public place, like a burger bar for example.
Make sure you take an adult with you.
Don't send nasty messages or chain letters. If you get any, stop reading and tell your mum, dad or someone you trust.
Don't open emails or files from people you don't really know. They may contain a virus which will harm your computer, or a nasty message.
Do not accept private messages or open an attachment or downloaded file unless you know and trust the person who sent it.
Talk to your parents or carers about how you're using the internet, and they'll probably worry less.
Parents and carers often worry about how you are using the internet.
Talk to your school friends about the best sites to visit.
Avoid any sites that you or your friends have felt uncomfortable about. If anything does make you feel embarrassed, uncomfortable or upset, don't reply to it. Log off.
Chat rooms can be fun, but they can also be dangerous places. If you use chat rooms or want to know more
